Everything You Need to Make a Microwave Dot Cake

Oil: Oil keeps this microwave cake soft and tender.

Milk: Milk adds moisture and helps bring the cake batter together.

Vanilla Extract: A little vanilla gives the cake that classic birthday cake flavour.

Granulated Sugar: Just enough sugar to lightly sweeten the cake base.

All-Purpose Flour: Flour gives the cake its structure.

Baking Powder: Baking powder helps the cake rise in the microwave.

Before You Start: FAQ

What is a dot cake?

A dot cake is a small cake, often served in a cup or container, topped or coated with tiny round sprinkles. The viral version is colourful, nostalgic, and very satisfying to eat with a spoon.

Can I make this without a microwave?

This recipe was designed specifically for the microwave, so I recommend using the microwave for the best result. It gives you a soft single-serve cake in about 1 1/2 minutes, depending on your microwave.

What kind of frosting should I use?

Cream cheese frosting or sweetened whipped cream are my favourite because it keeps the cake light and creamy. You can also use vanilla buttercream, chocolate frosting, or any leftover frosting you have in the fridge.

Do I need to let the cake cool before frosting?

Yes please! Let the cake cool before adding your favourite frosting. If the cake is still warm, the topping can melt and slide around, which is delicious but less adorable.

Can kids help make this?

Absolutely! Kids can help stir the batter, choose the frosting, and dip or sprinkle the top with dot sprinkles. An adult should handle the microwave and remove the hot cake.

Mindful Moments

  • Watch the batter come together into a smooth, simple sprinkled cake.
  • Smell the warm vanilla aroma as the cake comes out of the microwave.
  • Let the cake cool for a few quiet minutes before adding the topping.
  • Dip the frosted cake top into sprinkles
  • Take the first spoonful while the cake is soft, creamy, and covered in tiny colourful dots.

Tips for the Best Microwave Dot Cake

  • Use a microwave-safe mug, ramekin, or small bowl.
  • Do not overmix the batter. A few lumps are perfectly fine.
  • Microwave times can vary slightly, so start with 1 1/2 minutes and check the centre of the cake.
  • Let the cake cool before frosting so the topping stays fluffy and smooth.
  • Use a wide, shallow bowl of sprinkles if you want to dip the frosted top.
  • For a lighter dessert, use sweetened whipped cream.
  • For a more birthday-cake style dessert, use vanilla buttercream and rainbow nonpareils.
